Cabinetry Design Trends for 2024

Trends & Styles we are embracing in the Podocarp Workshop this year.

Interior design trends in New Zealand for 2024 continue to showcase the use of a material close to our heart, timber. The use of wood in interior design has been a consistent and timeless element. Kitchens in particular are set to continue to incorporate this stunning versatile material.

A specific focus on the use of Oak & Walnut, the latter you will know from one of previous blogs, is a team favourite, quoting “it is a beautiful timber,  always enabling stunning high end finishes, it's great to work with too”. Plywood is creeping readily on the scene for kitchen cabinetry, and here in the workshop we have already completed a Kitchen crafted from American White Oak pressed onto Meranti Ply.

Cabinetry this year continues the focus on smart but stylish storage solutions. Personalisation and customisation enables homeowners to reflect their individual style as well as functional needs, enabling cabinetry to not only fit the space and purpose, but giving great individual aesthetics to a room.

As a completely custom joinery and cabinetry workshop, everything we create is individual for our clients needs and vision. What we do love to embrace is working alongside clients who want to keep the characteristics consistent with the period of their home build, whilst encompassing some modern techniques and styling. We have some exciting projects scheduled this year which highlights this point.

We have always made a lot of Shaker Style doors on our cabinetry and they have remained popular and timeless throughout the years. A growing focus is now on the skinny shaker, allowing this elegant look to be brought more into the modern design trend. In contrast, but in style, a deep bevelled frame in keeping with the shaker style gives another more contemporary option and possibly more opulent.

Timber use in design and cabinetry brings added texture and layered material creating personality, it also works perfectly alongside other materials such as metal and glass. Combining an array of materials and finishes adds character and visual interest.Podocarp has seen this trending through into large fitted cabinets for lounge and dining areas. Large multi-purpose units for both storage and display; books, glassware, cocktails & collectables. Having functional items encased behind glass but clearly visible. Creating a stunning display area as well as integral storage

Natural tones continue to be a safe and classical choice and will remain on trend, with some opting more for darker, rich timber accents and display units. Either way, lacquered finish on cabinetry doors and drawers will remain popular, however it will be interesting to see if our clients embrace a change from the classic white go to, and opt for brighter, more colourful choices as designers predict.

Sustainability in all areas of cabinetry and joinery is an ever broadening feature in decision making and choice. As well as the material factor and waste, just the utility of quality finished cabinetry gives the longevity, endurable style and ultimately improved sustainability. Cabinetry & joinery  is the backbone to the physical home, but it also unites people through art, comfort and purpose.
