Retro-Fit Double Glazing - Further information and frequently asked questions.
Retro-fit glazing is a process that enables existing windows to be fitted with double glazing. This is not only sustainable, it can be a more cost effective option as well as allowing you to keep the original timber joinery of the home and the stunning characteristics it offers.
Timber windows/joinery are also the most thermal option available, so keeping your existing timber frames will only enhance the benefits of the double glazing further.
Retro-fit double glazing can be completed with a variety of glazing options to suit all budgets; from standard double glazing through to Premium Low-E with Argon gas.
We are happy to send you through an e-brochure for further information about the qualities of each glass type and their thermal performance.
As experienced cabinet makers and joiners, we are also able to fix any damage frames, as well as make new timber joinery if required.
All new timber joinery will be under-coated.
The retro-fit double glazing process;
We will need to carry out an on site measurement of the windows that are to be retro-fitted.
We generally complete all our glazing work back at our workshop, however this is location dependent. This enables a more efficient process, as well as manage on-site mess and waste disposal.
We dispose of all the old glass and endeavour to utilise a sustainable way if able, much going to be repurposed.
Depending on the amount of windows to be glazed, we will generally remove them in stages, each time the window will be fully covered up, providing protection from the outside elements. We will then carry out the retro-fit glazing work back at the workshop and then return to re-install the newly double glazed windows. Sometime this will happen onsite.
The timber joinery will not be damaged in any way during the process. There will be some cracking of the paint between the frame and window, we minimise this as best possible. Windows will generally need repainting after this process.
If you are having leadlights double glazed, these windows take more time to complete. The lead lights are cleaned and maintained as required, before the retro-fit double glazing process.
When retro-fit double glazing traditional sash windows/double hung windows, the weighting system allowing them to function will need to be adjusted to allow for the heavier glass. This will be quoted accordingly.
Questions to consider when approaching us for retro-fit double glazing work;
Would you like the window joinery stripping back for re-painting or oiling (internal part only)? Most people plan to re-paint their frames following the retro-fit process as the new beadings will need to be painted.
Do you wish to weather seal any opening windows at the same time. A quotation for this can be provided.
Can I just have part of our home retro-fitted, and the rest at a later date? Yes, we can retro-fit room by room if you wish, as and when the time or budget allows for you.
Do you have any extra remedial work you wish to be carried out at the same time such as jammed windows to be adjusted or fixed windows you would like made to be opening?
